FAQS - Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How does wireless work?
A: Wireless technology operates by dividing a city into small geographic areas called cells. Each cell is served by its own low-power radio transmitter. Cell sites are connected by wireline facilities to the Mobile Switching Center (MSC). MSC is linked to the regular landline network through the local telephone company central office which connects you to the worldwide telephone network. This procedure is reversed when you receive a call. As you travel through any area with wireless service, your call automatically passes from one transmitter to another without noticeable interruption.

Q: How do I go about getting a wireless phone?
A: Call DMT to find out what phone and rate plan is right for your life-style. You will need to provide us with credit information to establish a SBW account in your name or the name of your business. If you already have a wireless phone you can order accessories from DMT also.

Q: Is there a number I can call when I have problems with service when I am out of the local area (Roaming)?
A: Yes! You can call 1-800-ROAMING, you will be asked to enter your cellular phone area code and first three digits or your number. You will then be transferred to your home Customer Care representative who will assist you. Airtime charges will apply. And as always, you can dial *611 or 611 from your wireless phone and be assisted by the local Customer Service Representative.

Q: How do I make a call while I am roaming?
A: There are basically two dialing patterns to use while roaming. For local calls dial 10 digits (area code + 7 digit number), and for long distance dial 1 + area code + 7 digit number.

Q: I locked my phone for security reasons and now I can't unlock it. What do I do?
A: Each wireless phone has different functions and features. Normally, the unlock code is the last three or four digits of your wireless phone number. You may want to refer to your owner's manual for directions specific to your phone if this combination does not work.

Q: Do I need an external antenna with my Transportable/Handheld phone?
A: An external antenna enhances the power to your phone and improves your signal strength to minimize sporadic problems.

Q: Where can I get information about Roaming rates?
A: If you need roaming rates or other information while you are away from your home area, call 1-800-ROAMING (airtime charges will apply), or dial *611 or 611 from your home coverage area.

On August 26, 1998, BellSouth Wireless Data launched the BellSouth Interactive PagingSM Service, giving paging users the ability to initiate and respond to messages via Internet e-mail, to other pagers, fax machines and telephones, at anytime, nationwide, directly from the new RIM Inter@ctive™ Pager 950. The service has been commercially available since September 1, 1998.

BellSouth Interactive Paging subscribers in the metropolitan areas of Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Washington, D.C./Baltimore have coverage that is comparable to one-way local paging while 93 percent of the urban U.S. business population - covering 266 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) - has coverage that is similar to nationwide one-way paging.

BellSouth Interactive Paging Service uses the RIM Inter@ctive Pager 950 from Research In Motion Limited. A compact and highly functional device with a full keyboard, the Inter@ctive Pager 950 is an easy to use, wearable device that fits in the palm of a hand and is powered by an Intel386™ processor. BellSouth Interactive Paging Service subscribers can read, edit and forward Internet e-mail worldwide, and also can receive and respond to messages from the BellSouth Wireless Data Web site from Internet users anywhere in the world. When receiving e-mail, the BellSouth Interactive Paging Service provides the ability for subscribers to either receive a long message - consisting of up to 16,000 characters or about 2,700 words - or receive a unique message header preview. The message header preview feature allows the user to view the subject and size of a message before it's sent to the pager; the user may choose either to download and read the message or forward it to another e-mail address or fax machine for later viewing.

If you are sending to an Interactive Paging subscriber you will be notified that the subscriber has received the message. Interactive Paging subscribers also receive acknowledgments on their pager screen that their messages have been delivered.
